Today, Sunday, is European Data Protection Day. Since 2007, the day has been intended to raise awareness of the importance of data protection within the EU. Today we explain what else you need to know about the day and how the BAUR Group is tackling the issue of data protection.
The idea for the Europe-wide day of action originated from the European Data Protection Convention. On January 28, 1981, the Council of Europe adopted the so-called Convention No. 108. The aim of the convention was the "protection of individuals with regard to automatic processing of personal data". The Data Protection Convention was the first legally binding intergovernmental data protection agreement and international instrument for the protection of personal data.
The Convention was intended to ensure that the right to privacy exists in all signatory states in the context of the automatic processing of personal data. All signatory states have automatically undertaken to transpose this convention into their own national law.
All 47 member states of the so-called Council of Europe have signed the agreement. In addition to all EU member states, other countries such as Switzerland and other countries outside the EU such as Mexico and Tunisia have also signed the agreement.
In order to further strengthen data protection in the EU, the European Parliament adopted the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) on April 14, 2016. It came into force almost two years later, in May 2018. It offers all users and companies more protection and legal certainty.
The GDPR makes it mandatory to disclose how personal data is collected and processed.
The BAUR Group handles personal data every day in various areas of activity. The data protection requirements and their fulfillment are the foundation for the trust of our customers, business partners and employees. The basis for dealing with data protection is the aforementioned GDPR and the German Federal Data Protection Act (BDSG).
To give all employees an overview of the basics of data protection, a collection of the most important questions and answers on the subject of data protection is available on the intranet. Anne Petruck has been the company data protection officer since July 1, 2023. In an interview with our former colleague Sina Schneider, Anne explains why data protection is becoming increasingly important.
