BAUR colleague Konstantin Hable does it again and again. The system administrator from Nordhalben has been involved as an election worker in his home community for years. We met him for an interview.
I have worked as a poll worker five times so far, most recently in the Bundestag elections on February 23. I was motivated by the fact that I want to actively contribute to democracy in our country. Another factor is that my mother has been an election assistant for many years, so I have already come into contact with this voluntary work. In addition, a very good friend and schoolmate of mine works in the municipal administration of my home municipality of Nordhalben and can count on me at every election.
That's easy to answer: Anyone can become an election assistant. Only two requirements must be met: The person must be eligible to vote - i.e. be at least 18 years old and have German citizenship.
As an election assistant, you have various tasks that ultimately ensure the proper conduct of the election. You welcome voters to the polling station, check their eligibility to vote in the electoral register and hand out ballot papers. They are also the point of contact for questions. After the polling station closes, we count the votes and transmit the results to the municipality.
Oh yes! There was a very special situation! For the 2024 European elections, we had a quasi marquee atmosphere at the polling station. The planned polling station - the Nordwaldhalle in Nordhalben - could not be used due to water damage and a small beer tent was set up in front of the actual location, where the votes were cast and later counted. That doesn't happen very often!
I can only encourage everyone to get involved as a poll worker, as it is a valuable way to strengthen your community and support the democratic process. Poll workers not only ensure the election as such, they also take on the responsibility of helping to cast the vote. That's a really good feeling! The state grants a small allowance of 35 euros on top - the so-called refreshment allowance. Employees in public administration also receive an additional day off.
This can be done directly at the relevant electoral authority in your municipality, at the town hall or at the district administration - either by telephone or via an online form. If not enough volunteers come forward, eligible voters can be appointed. For example, "employees of the administration" can be appointed, according to the Federal Returning Officer.
