Time travel to the year 1925

The world dances, the music pulsates, and a small company called BAUR begins its journey. What was that time like? How did Baur get its start? Come with us on a nostalgic journey of discovery!

BAUR in 1925: The beginnings of a success story

In 1925, while the world danced the Charleston and was intoxicated by jazz, something unique began: the history of BAUR.
At a time when shopping was still very different. No huge shopping centers, no convenient online shopping, but small stores that often only offered a limited selection. It was precisely then that Friedrich Baur had a revolutionary idea: he founded Germany's first shoe mail order company and invented not only free returns, but also payment by installments. With a great deal of passion, commitment to quality and customer satisfaction, he laid the foundations for a success story that continues to this day. From practical household goods to fashionable accessories, BAUR already offered a variety that customers appreciated back then.

But what else has happened this year?

The First World War is behind us, the world breathes a sigh of relief and suddenly everything is full of jazz, Charleston and an irrepressible zest for life. The Roaring Twenties are here! People want to party, dance, enjoy life to the full and forget all the dark years.

Fashion that pushes boundaries (and is sometimes a little crazy)

Pure girl power! Corsets are consigned to the back of the wardrobe, skirts become shorter (just above the knee - a real scandal!) and hair is cheekily cut into a bob. The "flappers" were born - independent, self-confident women who didn't let anyone tell them what to do or not to do. Sequin dresses, long pearl necklaces, headbands and lots of make-up are an absolute must. And the men? They wear suits with broad shoulders and pants that are sometimes a little too wide - the forerunner of the oversized look?

Music that moves the legs (and touches the soul)

Jazz, baby! Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Bessie Smith and Josephine Baker are the absolute superstars. Charleston is danced until dawn in the dance halls, the music is wild, improvised and the atmosphere is simply electrifying. If you like it a little quieter, you can listen to the sounds of operettas and pop songs. But honestly: jazz simply has the most irresistible groove!

What you read in 1925 (and why)

One book that fits perfectly into the year 1925 is undoubtedly "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald. A story about wealth, excess, unrequited love and the search for the American dream - a reflection of the Roaring Twenties. But beware, spoiler alert: all that glitters is not gold in the end, and the dream often bursts like a soap bubble! If you prefer something a little lighter, pick up a dime novel, tabloid newspaper or gossip magazine. The main thing is that you have something exciting to tell the next time you meet up with your friends for a chat!

Tech gadgets from 1925: what was the latest craze?
  • The radio: the latest sensation! Suddenly you can listen to music and news live at home. Radio evenings become a family event.
  • The vacuum cleaner: Finally, no more tedious manual cleaning! The vacuum cleaner makes life so much easier.
  • The camera: Selfies didn't exist yet, but at least you could take family portraits.
What else went on
  • Prohibition in the USA: Alcohol is banned, but of course that doesn't stop anyone from partying in secret in speakeasies.
  • The first airlines are established: Flying is slowly but surely becoming a mass phenomenon. Who would have thought that we would be jetting around the world in just a few hours?
  • The rise of Hollywood: the dream factory flourishes and stars like Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford become icons.

The Roaring Twenties were a time of new beginnings, creativity and change. A time when people celebrated life and broke new ground. And it is precisely this positive energy, this innovative spirit and this courage to change that we at BAUR still want to live and pass on today.

Perhaps this is your sign to muster up a little courage for a change? Then take a look here! 💛
